The ‘Moss Reid’ mystery Black Marigolds takes place around 12 days in the run-up to Christmas. In its early days the book even had the working title The Twelve Days of Cowtown. And being stuck in such a seasonal setting, it includes plenty of encounters with Christmas Jumpers, Christmas pub crawls and Christmas pop songs.

Now there are Christmas songs, and there are Christmas songs. The good, the bad and the very ugly.

Here’s a couple of the better ones, performed by the brilliant Irish band Pugwash.

The first is an unplugged recording for radio of a certain Roy Wood classic. The second is their charity single Tinsel and Marzipan – watch out in that second video of “Pugwash and Friends” for Neil Hannon (of The Divine Comedy)  in the daft hat.
