The 12th day of Christmas is the day to take the Christmas decorations down. In Ireland January 6th is also known as “Women’s Christmas”, or “Nollaig na mBan”, a day when the men of the house would do all the household chores, while Herself would be queen for a day.
Nollaig na mBan was particularly popular around Cork and Kerry, then went out of fashion, then over the past decade or so has been making a comeback. And proper order too.
As celebrations go, it’s very “organic” and still thankfully uncommercial. So what has Nollaig na mBan to do with Moss Reid?
A little spoiler: the second book Black Marigolds was originally going to take place over the 12 days of Christmas, ending with a murder on the 12th day. If you’ve read it you’ll know what actually happened of course…
